Adidas Terrex AX2R Disc Golf Shoe Review

Disk golf is getting big day by day but not big enough to get its own line of shoes. Yet the Adidas Terrex AX2R is praised highly to be one of the best Disc golf shoes. But is it worth the praise? Or is it just some sort of hype?

Disc Golf is played on rough grounds and it also involves a lot of walking and footwork in some scenarios. Although the sport does not have any official code for the shoe (Thus there is no streamlined shoe production of it), there are some hidden/ unspoken requirements that anyone can figure out by looking at the terrain. Can this Adidas Terrex AX2R meet them all? Let us do a review of it.

An Insight of the Adidas Terrex AX2R Shoe

The Adidas Terrex AX2R was originally designed for outdoor adventures such as hiking, camping, etc. It has a stylish design and comes in two colors. Black and Carbon grey.

The design of the shoe is upto the standards for all sorts of outdoor challenges to some extent. But for certain environments and weather, it will not be the best choice.

The design of these Terrex AX2R shoes is very eye-catching. It gets a solid 5 out of 5 in design. The shoe is made especially for rugged terrains and inclines. By looking at its outsole you can easily tell that this shoe is made for challenging terrains.

It has a super breathable upper covering with a padded design for foot support. It is also water-resistant. The upper is made with textile and synthetic materials.

The outsole design has many necessary properties. For one, this outsole unit extends and bends on the front to create a protective bumper for your toes. If you tip over any obstacle in the road, your toes will be safe for this protection. The treads are deep and designed to create a multidirectional grip for pivoting your movement.

The back part of the outsole, under and behind the heel area, is designed to generate more braking power. This is very useful for walking on a downhill surface. In addition, the outsole bends and extends in selected sides to create a safety harness for the midsole.

The midsole is designed to provide comfort and cushioning to the foot while also protecting your foot and leg from critical injuries.

The midsole are constructed with Adiprene elastic foam material. It is responsible for reducing the pressure felt by your feet and absorbs all the shock.

It is an EVA midsole that will last for a long time and give you endless comfort. It also has a molded sock liner for ensuring maximum comfort.

Additional Design Info

The design of the Adidas Terrex AX2R is comfortable and eye-catching. But there is more to it.

The upper of the shoe is made with textile and synthetic leather. You won’t find any use of leather in this shoe. The upper also comes in a mesh-like design for super breathability. It is water-resistant but not waterproof. To tackle this drawback, Adidas has upgraded this shoe to make it waterproof and named it Adidas Terrex AX2R GTX.

It also has other useful designs like a hook in the heel area and extra synthetic padding on the top, under the closure. The closure is a lace-up closure.

We have talked about the soul. It is rubberized, shock-absorbing, and features deep treads. But one additional piece of info is the branding of Adidas in the outsole. There is an engraved Adidas logo in the middle part of the outsole, behind the front treads, and in front of the heel area. If you are a fan of this brand, then you will surely love this detail.

How Well Does The Adidas Terrex AX2R Perform For Disc Golf?

As we said earlier that there is no specific type of shoe mentioned in the Disc Golf rules, nor are there any shoe manufacturers that produce shoes for Disc Golf. But the Adidas Terrex AX2R is highly praised to be a good Disc Golf shoe. So how well is the shoe for Disc golf? Let us judge by the criteria necessary for a Disc golf shoe.

Disc golf is played in two types of terrains. Well maintained and plain terrain and the other one is unmaintained uneven terrain. For beginners, they might play in the well-maintained terrains.

But as you advance through the course of Disk golf, the terrains will get more difficult and uneven. Also, there is the consideration of the weather. Wet and rainy weather means slippery ground which will require our shoes to generate much more grip to make a good stance.

So in short, you will need a type of shoe that can generate a great amount of grip on uneven grounds. Luckily the Adidas Terrex AX2R is up for the challenge.

The outsole of this shoe is rubberized. The rubberized construction is a good choice for gripping Then there are the multi-directional treads for generating grip in all angles. In addition, there are the braking treads behind the heel for downhill terrains.

So the Adidas Terrex AX2R checks out to be ok for generating grip in Disc Golf.

The support of the shoe is related to the paddings and cushioning. The more support your shoe will have, the better it will provide comfort and safety. In that case, a shoe with thick and sturdy cushioning is more preferable. But that actually depends on your personal preference.

The Adidas Terrex AX2R has better cushioning. It has cushioning in the upper and the midsole is also designed to provide long-term cushioning. So ultimately the Adidas Terrex AX2R has good enough support for Disc Golf.

The weight of the shoe may seem like an unnecessary concern but in Disc Golf, the weight plays a huge role.

Disk golf involves a lot of walking. You might have to walk miles and there is no place to sit but the ground. So if you wear a heavy shoe, your legs will get tired quickly from l9ng distance walking.

Then there is also the relation between protection and weight. Heavier shoes give better protection than lightweight shoes. But lightweight shoes do provide an adequate amount of protection for the wearer. So lightweight shoes check out to be the better choice if you are considering playing in big terrain.

The Adidas Terrex AX2R is very lightweight and it has moderate protection like a toe cap in the front. So it is a suitable shoe for long-distance walking and Disc golf.

Disc golf terrains have a lot of punishment loaded for the shoes, especially the uneven ones. Those uneven terrains and Disc golf courses have a lot of debris, obstacles, and sharp objects laying in the ground.

If you are not careful, you can easily damage your shoe. Even worse, critically injure your feet.

Even if you stay careful, it will get damaged and become unusable after a month or more if your shoe is not durable enough. Then you will have to spend money again to buy another pair. So it is better to buy a durable and expensive one on your first go.

The Adidas Terrex AX2R has a durable outsole. It is made with rubber and designed especially for rugged terrains.

But the upper of it is kind of concerning in such cases. The upper is made of textile and synthetic materials. It can easily get ruined or torn by obstacles and dead tree branches on the road.

So if we judge by the outsole construction, the Adidas Terrex AX2R is up for the challenges in Disc golf. But in the case of the upper construction, this pair of shoes falls short in this department.

Waterproofing is not something to be concerned about if you play on dry and sunny days. But most of the time, the challenging courses of Disc golf have mud and watery holes in them. So waterproofing is something that you cannot ignore totally.

Also if you play in a rainy season, rain can appear at any moment and if your shoe is not waterproof, it will be wet and soaked with water which is something unappreciated by everyone.

So in short, get a waterproof shoe.

Unfortunately, the Adidas Terrex AX2R is not waterproof. It is water-resistant, which is good enough for dealing with muddy terrains but it is not good enough for rainy environments. That is why Adidas has upgraded this shoe like the Adidas Terrex AX2R GTX to be waterproof.

So this is one place where the Adidas Terrex AX2R falls short.

Now based on the Adidas Terrex AX 2 R's performance judgment, we would say it is a good choice for Disc golf.

  • Durable outsole
  • Stylish design
  • Affordable price range
  • Sturdy build quality
  • Good grip

  • Water-resistant, not waterproof

So how well does the Adidas Terrex AX2R do for Disc golf? Does it live up to the expectations? We would say yes and it is good enough for Disc golf. This pair of shoes has the necessary durable construction with enough support and grip generation. The only problem is that it is not waterproof. So for rainy days, we would not recommend this pair of Adidas shoes.
