It is the worst possible thing that can happen to your shoes when you are just walking and minding your own business. It can be highly frustrating and can ruin not only your shoes but also your entire day.

In this article we are going to show you what measures you can take in order to remove chewing gum from the sole of your shoes. So if you are interested in finding out what we say, stick with us till the end of this article.

Things that Can Remove Gum

A lot of things can help you to remove gum from sneakers. Let’s discuss some effective strategies that would be helpful.

Ice

Ice can be highly effective in removing the gum from your sneakers. This works because the exposure to the ice can harden the gum on your shoes and make it much easier to peel off.

You can actually rub a single cube of ice over the gum that is stuck and be able to remove the gum. Just gently apply the ice and rub it for 10 to 20 minutes straight. You might have to change the ice cubes from time to time as it might melt within a minute or two.

This should freeze the gum and make it far easier to remove from your shoes.

Peanut Butter

This may come off as crazy, but yes, peanut butter can help remove the gum from your shoes. However, peanut butter does the reverse effect of ice. Instead of freezing the gum to harden it and pull it off, you can use peanut butter to soften the gum even more and then peel it off.

You will have to leave the peanut butter on the bottom of the shoes for at least 20 to 30 minutes for this to work.

Once it’s been sitting for a while, you can scrape the gum covered in peanut butter off and clean the shoes.

WD40

Yes, we are talking about the WD40 spray that you use on your bicycle chain. This spray can be used to remove gum from your shoes and also from hair.

This spray works very similarly to freezing. The WD40 spray is used to harden the gum and remove it by just peeling it off. It is super simple to do and does not take long at all.

How to Remove Gum from Sneakers

In our opinion the best method for removing gum from your shoes is by freezing it. But not by applying ice like we mentioned above, but by putting it in the freezer. While the above methods may be effective, this method would give you the best results.

  1. At first you will have to place the shoes inside a plastic bag. Make sure to get a bag that your shoes will fit inside properly. If it does not just make sure the part with the gum stuck to it is pressed to the plastic bag.
  2. Make sure the gum is pressed firmly to the plastic. Use your fingers to press them properly and get the plastic stuck to the gum.
  3. Take the shoes inside the plastic bag into the freezer. If your shoes are inside the bag completely, then store them as they are, but if they stick outside the bag a bit, try to keep them away from any food items.
  4. Let the shoes freeze inside the freezer for at least 2 hours. You need to let the gum freeze properly or else it won’t come off easily.
  5. After you have let it sit for about an hour or two, take the shoe (or shoes) out of the freezer.
  6. Pull the plastic bag along with the gum to remove the gum from the shoes. As it was being frozen for such a long time, it should come off pretty easily without leaving any residue.

How to Remove Gum Reside off Shoes

Now that you have gotten rid of the gum itself, it is time to clean any residue that the gum leaves after being removed. Scrape off excess gum and clean the shoes with necessary tools.

You can use cleaning reagents as well to completely get rid of any residue of gum. Use brushes with fine bristles to gently clean the residue gum and clean the shoe much better.

You could even polish your shoes to further remove any stains left by the gum. This way you can make your shoes look as good as new and won’t be able to tell if there was any gum stuck to it to begin with!
